We all know the recession isn’t any fun. Literally. We mourn the days when going out to dinner was a weekly event and going to the movies seemed inexpensive. But this blog is called ‘Learning to Deal’, not ‘Doesn’t Life Suck?’. Here are some free ways to keep yourself entertained:
1. Swap Movies With Friends
Renting from blockbuster still costs money, which can add up quickly. Instead of watching your copy of ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, why not trade it for your friends copy of ‘M.I.B2′? You’ll get to see new movies and you won’t have to pay a thing! And I’ll bet your friend won’t charge you a late fee.
2. Spend Quality Time With Fido
Animals are people too! Well, sort of. Animals get bored too, and that can lead to chewing on furniture, getting into the garbage, and other bad behavior. So if you have an hour to kill, why not play a game of fetch? Squash a piece of paper into a ball for an instant cat toy. Try teaching your bird to talk, or hold it up to a mirror. Watching my parakeet with a mirror is like watching a match between Titto Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. Only with more feathers.
3. Go on a Treasure Hunt
15 paces from under the couch cushions, x marks the spot. Search every cluttered nook and cranny in your house for spare change. I’ve hauled $15 in one hunt, so not only is this activity free, it actually makes you money!
4. Put PantyHose on Your Head
Need to entertain the kids? Step 1. Put pantyhose on your head. Step 2. Get down on all fours. Step 3. Chase the children around the house making wild-angry-mad-bull noises and gouge them with your very fashionable nylon horns. Chasing small, laughing children is just naturally entertaining. It’s also good exercise!
5. Cook.
You probably have everything you need to make cookies. Giving cookies as a gift not only shows that you care, but will get rid of leftovers before they spoil.
6. Play ’7 clicks’
7 clicks is a game my boyfriend and I invented out of sheer boredom. Write down some random words or names of people on separate scraps of paper. Some good words are ‘bread’ ‘Tiger’ ‘George Washington’ ‘Grass’ ‘Tyra Banks’ ‘Ego’ and so on. Without looking, pick two words. Lets say I picked ‘Tiger’ and ‘Grass’. The first word, ‘Tiger’ would be my starting point. ‘Grass would be my goal’. Now, get on the computer and type ‘Tiger’ into your search box and click the wikipedia article that comes up. Your goal is to get to the wikipedia article on ‘Grass’ in exactly 7 clicks, by clicking on the links within the original article.
7. Create New LOL cats
Creating them is almost as fun as reading them!
